Velankanni Matha Church in South India
Velankanni Matha Church is another famous pilgrim centre in South India. It is situated in Nagapattinam district, Velankann village a few hundred km away from Chennai, Tamil Nadu state of India. The church got the status of basilica in 1962 by Pope John XXIII. This place is popularly known as Basilica of ‘Our Lady of Good Health’
Thousands of devotees visit this church as they believe that the blessing of ‘Our Lady of health’ will cure all diseases. This is a Roman Catholic Church and Gothic style of architecture is a unique feature of the church . There is an extended Basilica in which you can find the statue of Jesus Christ. Opposite to the Basilica. There is also a museum which has a rare collection of exhibits. The Pope has already declared this place as a”holy city”.
Velankanni Matha Church Festival
The festival in connection with feast day is celebrated from 29th August to 8th September (the feast of nativity of Mary) every year attracting millions of devotees. On this day prayers are conducted in all south Indian languages in addition to English.
