Vagamon, A Secluded Hill Station In Gods Own Country

In Kerala (popular in India as God’s own country) they say “gods wanted a remote getaway from their daily chores, so they built Vagamon“. True to the saying, Vagamon located in the Kottayam-Idukki border is just that – beautifully green hill lands covered with velvety green tea garden, beautiful meadows, valleys and forest cover.

Vagamon is also recognised as “Scotland Of Asia”.  Placed about 1000 meters above sea level, the weather  is pleasant all year round, except the monsoons from June to August. Through summer the temperature is an ideal  10 to 23 °C. No trip to Kerala is not complete without a visit to Vagamon. If you are the the kind who look for accredited tourist ranking rankings, go no further. National Geography has repeatedly ranked Vagamon among the 50 most attractive tourist places in India.

Kurisumala is unique. Atop the hill is an Ashram (also know as Christian Monastery). You will surprised that in a Hindu state there is so much respect and emphasis on other religions. While the monks practise Christianity they have strong belief in Hindu spiritual practises. Daily activities in the Ashram include prayer, meditation, study and service. The Holy week of Good Friday is celebrated in grandeur. Devotees from many places carry wooden cross and climb the hill. These monks make their  lively hood by breeding cows, the milk they produce and collecting honey from bee hives in the rocky cleft.
