Pisa Tower Architecture
The Leaning Tower of Pisa is one of the four buildings that make up the Pisa Cathedral Complex called Piazza Dei Miracoli. The tower is the gem in Piazza’s crown. It is a bell tower with 207 columns in eight stories. Constructed with gleaming white marble, the tower looks like a huge wedding cake. The bottom story of the tower has 15 marble arches. The next six stories contain 30 arches each surrounding the tower. The final story has 16 arches. If you want to reach the top, you need to take the 297 step spiral staircase. The top of the tower is around 17 feet off the vertical. Reaching the top of the tower lets you enjoy the best views of the Piazza Del Duomo.
The Leaning Tower of Pisa is famous not only for its gently rising series of arches, but also for its legendary tilt. Now the tower leans on an angle of 4.1 meters. The incline of the bell tower often outshines its great architecture, which is an excellent example of Romanesque style. Fine multicolored marble is used to make the round tower. The bottom story of the tower has a blind pergola and a beautifully carved portal featuring bizarre structures of animals. The medieval bells remain in the eighth story, but for stability reasons they do not ring.
