The Summer Palace in Beijing is not only country’s largest royal garden, but also one of the best-preserved examples of this tradition of royal palaces, gardens and temples, some claim it is world’s best example of imperial gardens. In Chinese, the area is called “Gardens of Nurtured Harmony”. The gardens are almost 300 years old and have been recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.

Originally built as a resort for royalties to relax in, the site later was turned into the residence of the Qing Dynasty. Initially it was named Garden of Clear Ripple sand and its current name was given only in 1888. The resort has been damaged in several acts of destruction. However, thanks to the active reconstruction tourists throughout the globe are given the opportunity to enjoy this magnificent historical site, therefore, listing the Summer Palace as one of the top tourist destinations in China.

Built in 1750, the 728 meters long corridor was meant to let the emperor’s mother have a peaceful walk without any interruptions. Like most of the buildings of The Summer Palace, it too suffered from the fire of 1860. Luckily, it was reconstructed 26 years later. Its size and decoration that consists of approximately 14 thousand paintings, is what makes it so attractive to tourists.

The Summer Palace is one of the must-visit objects during a trip to China. Even though the most of the historical buildings have been reconstructed several times, it is still an amazing proof of the Chinese culture.
