Sumela Monastery is an elegant and historic monastery that finds its name coming from ‘Panagia Soumela‘ or ‘Virgin Mary of Soumela’, as the Greek translation attests.
Sumela Monastery Trivia
Completely hewn from rock, the Sumela Monastery stands in the forests south of Trabzon, and occupies a toe-tingling spot over a sheer precipice. Constructed in the 4th century—this was the time the Roman Empire split into east and west—the monastery owes its existence to two Athenian priests who, legend says, found a miracle-icon of the Virgin Mary in a cave and the two men, Barnabas and Sophronius, inspired by that event went on to build and dedicate the Sumela Monastery to the mother of Jesus, the Christ.
