Snake Island, Brazil
Ranked #5 in Brazil Tourism
The Snake Island commonly known in Brazil as Ilha da Queimada Grande is one of the most dangerous places on earth. With highest density of snakes anywhere in the world, human entry to the island is prohibited by the Brazilian Navy.
Interestingly the whole of Snake Island is inhabited with just one kind of snake – the Golden Lancehead Viper (one of the most venomous snakes in the world). The venom is so strong that when bitten it burns the flesh around it.
Various data show that there is 1 snake per every 1 meter or every 5 meters (depending on the research material you come across). Despite this high density, the Golden Lancehead Viper is an endangered species that lives only in this island. Further more inbreeding is adding to the risk of extinction. The snakes mainly feed on migrating birds that use the island as a resting place and there is always the risk of a freak forest fire killing most of the snakes.
Unfortunately or fortunately only scientists are allowed to visit the Snake Island.
