How to get to Shimba Hills National Reserve
Shimba Hills reserve is located near Mombasa in Kenya. You can reach the reserve by taking ferry from Mombasa. You can then take the road climbing to reach Kwale Town, from which the main gate of the park is located just 3 kms away.
The Reserve covers 300 square kilometers. It receives around 855 to 1600 mm rainfall every year. Usually the climate is hot and moist, but the strong sea breezes from the coast keep the climate cool. The reserve is one of the best places in the world, where biodiversity is maintained well. Its ecosystem comprises of exotic plantations, grasslands, scrublands and forestlands. Shimba Hills National Reserve Wildlife
Shimba Hills National Reserve is rich in vegetation. It is home to a large population of African Elephants. It is estimated that around 700 elephants live here. It is the only home of Sable Antelope. Bushy tailed mongoose, rufous elephant shrew and fruit bat are other species found here. The lush vegetation and heterogeneous landscapes support a wide range of bird lives. Red necked spur fowl, Zanzibar red bishop and croaking Cisticola are some of the bird species found here. It has been recorded that 111 bird species live here. African hawk, cuckoo, sunbird, Honey guide and Kenya crested are the coastal endemic among them.
Attractions & Activities
The Reserve has a range of attractions, which include Sheldrick falls and Mwaluganje Forest. It is also a haven of a range of butterflies, beetle and mosquito. Python, lizard, cobra and gecko also live here.
