Have you heard of running of the bulls (Encierro in Spanish) that happens in Spain? It’s one crazy tradition. Imagine running in front of a group of raging bulls on the streets of Pamplona, this is definitely not for the weak-hearted. Having said that, it is one of the most celebrated events of the very famous 7-day festival of Sanfermines.
Origin of Running of the Bulls Event
This goes way back to 14th century when men took cattle to the markets to sell them. To get them to move fast they used simple tactics of fear and excitement. After using this tactic for years, moving and speeding up the cattle became a competition as local men would try and race in front of the bulls and make it safely to the other side without being overtaken by the bulls.
Running of the Bulls Event Rules
Unlike other dangerous fights or sports, which are usually performed by certified people, this event is open to all who are 18 and above. Some of the rules the participants are supposed to follow are (a) They have to run in the same direction as the bulls, (b) Not provoke the bulls and (c) Not be under the influence of any alcoholic beverages and illegal drugs.
Running of the Bulls Event 2013
Running of the Bulls is one of the most popular events in Spain and is held every year in the month of July. In 2013 the festival is from 6th July to 14th July and “running of the bulls” event is a part of the festival.
Deaths & Accidents at Running of the Bulls Event
There have been about 15 deaths till date and thousands of injuries where either the runner gets gored by a bull in the leg or dragged by a bull.
