Oymyakon, Russia – Coldest Inhabited Place on Earth

Ranked #2 in Coldest place on EarthOymyakon is a Russian village named after the Oymyakon River. Oymyakon is the coldest inhabited place on earth. The lowest temperature recorded in Oymyakon was -96.16 Fahrenheit (-71.2 degrees Celsius) in the year 1933. The mean temperature in Dec, Jan and Feb is in around -40 degrees Celsius  or lower. Yet there are about 500 people who live here and they have been living in these conditions for many generations now. People manage to live through the winter thanks to a hot spring that supplies hot water throughout the year. 

You might think the cold dampens the spirits of people here. think again – they have regular school, a bank, port office, grocery shop and even an airport that opens in summer.
