How to get to Nairobi National Park
Located 7 kms from Nairobi City, the Park is home to varied wildlife population. You can access it by air or by road. The park is just 30 minutes drive from Jomo Kenyatta International Airport. Nairobi National Park Wildlife
Nairobi National Park covers 117 Km² area. It is the only wildlife park in the world that is located in close proximity to the city. Only a fence separates the park from the city. It is the habitat of the endangered black rhinoceros. It is also an abode for more than 500 species of birds, which include crowned eagle and Kori Bustard. Apart from this, innumerable species of reptiles, animals, plants and insects thrive in the forests, grasslands, dry forests and rocky valleys in the park. The Park also features various permanent and seasonal wetlands.
Major wildlife attractions of the park include lion, cheetah, buffalo, hyena, zebra, giraffe, elands and wildebeest. The prominent environment of the park is open grass plain. Cynodon, Cypress, Themeda and Digitaria are the species found in the grassland areas of the park. In the dry seasons, the park becomes the habitat of migrating wild animals and birds. Dams built along the River Mbagathi attract many birds and aquatic species.
Attractions & Activities
Walking trails at hippo pools, Ivory Burning Site Monument, Nairobi safari walk and various picnicking sites are the other attractions of the Park. The hippo pool in riverine woodland lets you enjoy a pleasant walk. If you are fortunate enough, you can spot hippopotamus. However, crocodiles can be easily found. Baboon escarpment located at the southern border of the park offers an amazing view of dense vegetation and cliffs. Small huts with tables are available in the escarpment for picnic. Impala Observation point is situated in the highlands. It is a lush grass area surrounded by acacia trees. Narogoman Dam is the largest artificial dam in the park, which offers beautiful views.
Game viewing, wildlife observation, walking and bird watching are the main activities that can be enjoyed here. It is a perfect place for family outing, school picnics and friends get together.
