How to get to Mount Elgon National Park
Located near Mbale on the Uganda-Kenya border, Mount Elgon is the largest and oldest volcanic mountain in East Africa. The Park derives its name from the mountain. Mount Elgon is the most remarkable feature of this landscape. The park encompasses an area of 1279km² . The boundary of the park is around2, 200m above the sea level. Public transport is available to reach the park. It takes 3 to 4 hours from Kampala to Mbale.

Mount Elgon National Park is the habitat of more than 300 species of bird, which include Baglafecht Weaver, Elephant, leopard, giant forest hog, bushbuck, Waterbuck, African Goshawk and the endangered Lammergeier, making it a paradise for enthusiastic bird watchers. The park has numerous birding trails ideal for backpacking. It is also home to small antelopes. Elephants and buffalo can be observed on the lower slopes. Forest monkeys like Blue Monkeys and Black and white Colobus can be spotted here.
Elgon is an important watershed and its cool heights offer a refuge for a wide variety of flora and fauna. It supports a wide range of vegetation, including giant lobelia, montane forest, groundsel plants and moorland. At higher altitudes, olive and podocarpus gracilior can be found. Herbs like Helichrysum, Alchemilla, giant groundsels and Lobelia and grasses like Agrostis gracilifolia are grown abundantly in the park.

Attractions & Activities
Apart from flora and fauna, the park boasts of numerous attractions, which include gushing waterfalls, mesas, fascinating caves, cliffs, hot springs, gorges and mesas.
Cave exploration is the main thing to do in the Elgon Park. The vast caves are frequented by elephants and buffaloes at nights, which come to taste the natural salt deposited on the cave walls. Mountain climbing, hiking and bird watching are other excellent activities that can be enjoyed here. A climb on Mount Elgon’s moorland will let you enjoy unspoiled wilderness. You can also enjoy viewing the magnificent Sipi Falls. You can view some ancient cave paintings at the trailheads.
Elgon Park can be visited any time of the year. However, visiting in dry seasons, from January to March or June to August can help enhance your enjoyment.
