How to get to Meru National Park
Meru National Park is located in Meru, one of the main cities in Kenya. It is around 350 kms away from the capital city Nairobi. The park receives abundant rainfall which offers a favorable environment for various grass species to thrive.
There are many lush swamps in the park, which are also the result of plentiful rainfall. Hence, it is difficult to view game.
You can access the park from Nairobi by taking the Nyeri to Meru route via Nanyuki. The airstrips in the park allow tourists to reach by air conveniently. Meru Park covers 870 square kilometer area. Meru National Park Wildlife
Meru National Park is a sanctuary to varied wild animals, including eland, Grevy’s Zebra, Bush pig, elephants, cheetah, leopard, hippo, hartebeest, puff udder, buffalo and Bohor reedbuck. You can even spot reptiles like cobras and python. The rich landscape supports birdlife. More than 420 species of birds live here.
Attractions & Activities
The diverse vegetation is the major attraction of Meru Park. You can see wooded grasslands in the west, thorny bush land in the north and open grasslands in the rest of the park. The park is also home to dense reverine forests of raffia palm and doum.
One of the major attractions of the park is the former home of George and Joy Adamson, who wrote the famous book “Born Free”. The couple raised the lioness Elsa in this home. Elsa was buried in the park and some of Joy’s ashes were dispersed over her gravesite. You can enjoy the magnificent views of Mount Kenya from this park. Adamson’s falls is another main attraction of the park. The park also offers the views of Tana River.
