Lençóis Maranhenses National Park is a desert lagoon with azure blue water pockets separated by white sand dunes. Though Lençóis Maranhenses does not fall under the technical definition of a desert, it is the best way to describe this wonder of the world. Water is filled in the sand dune pits by yearly rainfall and seasonal flooding from Preguiças River.

Tourists from South America and around the world come to see it. The park spans municipalities of Humberto de Campos, Primeira Cruz, Santo Amaro and Barreirinhas. Busand & truck operated between Barreirinhas and São Luís covering about 260 kms. There are also air taxis from São Luís to Barreirinhas. Lençóis Maranhenses Park is huge and access is permitted only via authorized 4×4 vehicles.
Best time to Visit Lençóis Maranhenses Park
The best time to visit is between July and September, right after the rainy season. Interesting fact is that the park lagoons have a variety of fish though the water almost completely dries in summer.
