The lake has the characteristics of both lake and sea. The largest inflow of the Caspian Sea is from the Volga Rover. The Ural River also discharges into the Caspian Sea. The lake is home to more than 54 endemic species of fish, 64 endemic species of zooplankton and 190 endemic species of zoobenthos.
