In Norway, you might find something that could truly make your knees shake if you are one of those people who have always been afraid of heights. Kjeragbolten in Rogaland is a boulder located in the Kjerag Mountain.
The rock is stuck between two faces of cliff at the height of 1000 meters. It got in its current position somewhat 50 000 years ago during the last glacier period. Rock formations tended to rebound when the Norwegian Glacier was melting. Similar rebound happened to the Kjeragbolten, but in this case the rock rebounded faster than the rising of the sea level and so it got wedged between the cliffs of Kjerag and stands there till today.
Since the boulder is very stable and you need no permission to access it, Kjeragbolten has become a very popular attraction for tourists and base jumpers. The web is full of pictures with people, standing on the rock, which, watching from the sideline, looks like something insane to the most of us.
The pictures from above the rock reveal that the boulder itself is pretty wide so standing on it doesn’t take that much balance and coordination as it may seem. However, people still like to say that getting on the rock is not the smartest thing to do as it would take a slightest breeze of air for a lethal fall. Well, this is actually pretty questionable.
There have been no death cases reported of the Kjeragbolten climbers. Nine people have died when base jumping off the cliff, but this has nothing to do with the standing on the rock. People, who have been there, say that it is a great experience as the boulder simply looks astonishing. If you happen to be in Norway and want to have a crazy photo to be shown to your parents, Kjeragbolten is an object you must hike to.
