Kashmir Valley, India

Paradise on Earth” – this is how Jahangir, a Mughal emperor described the Kashmir Valley in India, the state of Jammu and Kashmir. It is surrounded by the Himalayan range on the east and the Pir Panjal on the west and south with an area of 4320 sq km. There is a popular belief that the land of Kashmir once was a lake. The name Kashmir itself in Sanskrit means “desiccated land” and the geologists claim that there indeed used to be a lake in the territory, which later turned into Jhelum River that eventually dried out. That is why some sea fossils can still be found there.

The legend of the region is that, there was a demon living in the lake. As he caused lots of trouble to the locals living on the shores, people decided to ask saint Kashyap to help them fight this demon. Kashyap agreed and drained the lake thus killing the demon, but the locals, in another version, named the place in honor of him.
