Tourism in Indonesia is an important part of the economy and rightfully so. With so many world famous heritage centres, natural wonders, beautiful beaches, dense forests and all within close proximity, Indonesia tourism is meant to exceed every tourists expectations. One can choose from Bali, Gili Islands for beaches; to Borobudur, Prambanana for heritage centres and the volcanic lake of Toba or Gunung Rinjani for an adventure expedition.

1. Bali

Bali is a province of Indonesia made of several small islands and the isle of Bali. Bali is often called a paradise by tourists and is the main tourist destination in the country. In addition to the best beaches in Asia  Bali is well-known for its highly developed arts, traditional dances, music, many museums and leather products.

2. Borobudur

Borobudur, an Indonesian Buddhist Temple built in 9th Century that is among the great temples in the world. Representing architectural style of the Gupta Empire that originated from India, Borobudur is well decorated with numerous relief panels and Buddha statues. Buddhists from around the world visit Borobudur to pay homage to lord Gautama Buddha. It is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a pride & glory of Indonesia tourism.

3. Yogyakarta

Yogyakarta is a province that is the cultural hub of Indonesia tourism. With the famous Borobudur and Prambanana temples in close proximity Yogyakarta is a place bustling with locals and visiting tourists. Withtin the region you also have the Kraton Complex (Sultans place) Tugu Monument from the colonial era, Gedung Agung (President’s Palace) and Kota Gede (yester year islamic capital).

4. Raja Ampat

Raja Ampat has amazing marine landscape and you can see various different types of aquatic life forms here. There is also a beautiful landscape provided by the crystal clear water making its way through the islands. The sea here is filled with all sorts of unique species of fishes and huge coral reefs. Cenderawasih Bay, the largest marine national park in Indonesia is located here.

5. Gili Islands

Tourism in Indonesian Gili Islands flourishing. It is a popular destination especially for Western tourists looking for an isolated island experience. Though the main attractions of this town are diving and snorkelling  several places like GiliMeno Bird Park (a sanctuary for birds) and Gili Trawangan (a great spot to watch the sunset) are appealing options.

6. Bunaken

Bunaken, an island that is part of the Bunaken National Marine Park is located at the northern part of the Sulawesi island.  Top attractions in Bunaken include hiking along the natural trails of the park, fishing,  dolphins & whale watching, scuba diving and snorkelling.

7. Lake Toba

Lake Toba, the largest volcanic lake in the world and one of the most interesting places among Indonesia tourism -Top 10 because of its unique origin. You will find the hot springs located in the western part of the lake. Though the hot springs are highly recommended, the water is a bit hot for everyone’s liking. So test it before getting in. It is a great place for the people looking for a quiet place to retreat.

8. Mount Rinjani

Mount Rinjani (aka Gunung Rinjani) is situated on the Lombok Island in Indonesia. The mountain contains the second highest volcano in Indonesia. Though it is pretty difficult to reach, many tourists go there every year to enjoy the natural beauties of its fantastic landscape. The region has many dangerous animals, so be cautious on your trail. The Conservation International and Traveler awarded Gunung Rinjani ‘The World Legacy Award’.

9. Komodo National Park

The most popular tourist attraction in Komodo National Park (one of the New 7 Wonders of Nature) as the name suggests  are the Komodo dragons. They are usually found on the white beaches and the corals. Also, if you travel during the night you should be able to see the flying fox. The Komodo dragons attract the most visitors and this is because they are near extinct and nowhere else to be found on earth making it a unique Indonesia tourism experience.

10. Tanjung Putting

Tanjung Putting is located in the Central Kalimantan and has a swampy low coastal terrain. It is also famous for its orangutan preservation where they study as well as rehabilitate orangutans with other primates. Four research centres have been established within the park. The park covers 416,040 hectares of dry land forest, mangrove and coastal beach forest, and peat swamps.
