#1. The Statue of Liberty is probably the most known object in the city and America’s most famous monument that has become a symbol of American liberty and democracy. Completed in 1884, this 93 meters high (including pedestal) statue was a gift from a French government celebrating America’s 100th anniversary – construction took 9 years in total. The monument represents Lady Liberty holding the Declaration of Independence in one hand and a torch (symbolizing Enlightenment) in the other. Anyone who is interested can walk up the statue all the way to the crown from which a great scene on the city is visible.
