Athirapally & Vazhacha Falls in Thrissur, Kerala
The well known Athirapally and Vazhachal Falls are in the Thrissur district of Kerala, south India. They are often referred to as sister waterfalls. To be more precise in location Athirapally Falls is near the Vazhachal forest division and at the entrance of the Sholayar range. The natures two beautiful falls both originating from Chalakudy river make a wonderful visit. The water eventually flows through the Western Ghats flowing through the forest into the Arabian sea.
Athirapilly falls is the stronger and more popular of the two . The river runs smoothly at the beginning, but becomes more turbulent as it reaches Athirapilly. The water hits around big rocks and cascades falls in three separate plumes from a hight of 80 feet (approximately 25 metre). Athirapilly falls is is often referred as “The Niagara Falls of India”. If you are looking out for a place away from the crowded and busy city, there is no other place better than these natural falls.
Forest area you can see Asian elephants,leopards,bison, tiger,lion tailed macaque and many more. The place is well known for excellent tea estates and is one highest elephant density habitats in Asia. Teak, bamboo and eucalyptus are the main plantations in this area. The scenic beauty of the falls and surrounding have attracted film industry to shoot many movies.
Best to visit Athirapally Falls is during monsoon season or in November-December.
Vazhachal Falls is a speeding up stream in the Chalakkudy River. It is located 36 km from Chalakkudi and 5 km from Athirappilly. Generally the water levels are low, but in monsoon it covers the river bed completely. The river and its surroundings are forests regions that protect a large amount of wildlife and vegetation.

There are two water-theme parks – the Dream World and Silver Storm are located to the west of Athirapally which is an attraction for children. These them parks and Athirapally together draw many tourist year round.
Getting to Athirapally Falls
- Chalakkudi is the nearest railway station
- Athirappilly is the nearest bus station.
- Cochin international airport is the nearest airport. From cochin airport go to chalakudi, and then from there its about 1.5 hrs drive, first to Vazhachaal and then Athirapally. Recommend hiring a taxi from Chalakudi than the airport for better fares.
