Akershus Fortress, Norway
Situated in the center of Oslo, Akershus Fortress is among the most wonderful sites in the capital. Built in the 14th century, it included also a medieval castle that later was rebuilt in a more Renaissance manner.

Luckily, the fortress has survived many wars and at one point, even served as a prison (locals called it The Slavery). Nowadays, the Akershus fortress carries other functions. It still has a military role, but the premises of the complex are also used as a hosting place for various events – ceremonies, celebrations, concerts and others. Norway’s Resistance Museum and Norwegian Armed Forces Museum have been established in the area and the fortress is accessible till 9 PM with guided tours offered to the visitors of the site.
